Translating handwritten documents
A handwritten document is uploaded to EZDocuAI the same way as any other — there is no separate flow or category for it. EZDocuAI auto-detects handwritten content and adapts processing on its own. Your job is to review the transcription before translating.
How to upload
- Dashboard → New Order. Purple button, top right.
- Drag the file into the upload area (PDF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, DOCX — up to 50 MB).
- When the upload finishes, EZDocuAI analyzes the file with AI and shows the result in the File Analysis panel, including the method tag: OCR (1 cr/page) for images/scans or Direct (1 cr/page) for digital text.
When the system detects handwriting
If the analysis picks up handwritten content, an active label appears next to the file:
- Handwritten — the whole document is handwritten.
- Mixed (printed + handwritten) — combines printed and handwritten text on the same page.
Handwritten text is processed with vision AI, not classical OCR. During processing the panel shows messages like "Transcribing handwritten text…" and "Reading handwritten text with AI…".
If the detection is wrong
Click the label to switch modes:
- If you see "Click to process as scanned image" → you convert the file to treat it as a normal scanned image (printed OCR).
- If you see "Click to enable handwritten mode" → you force the handwritten path again.
The toggle (purple when active) reflects the current state.
Reviewing the transcript
Once the transcription finishes, View transcript appears. Opening it shows the Transcribed text modal, where you can:
- Read it aloud via the Read button (built-in TTS) and stop with Stop.
- Copy the full transcribed text with the Copy button.
- Review what the AI detected before the translation step.
This review matters for handwritten content: proper nouns, hand-written dates, and ambiguous numerals (0/O, 1/7, 2/Z) are where corrections pay off the most before approving.
Credits
A handwritten document consumes the same as any other: 1 credit per page. The OCR method is labeled in the analysis panel (OCR (1 cr/page) vs Direct (1 cr/page)); being handwritten adds no surcharge.
Integrity and certification
The exported PDF carries the same SHA-256 integrity hash as any other EZDocuAI export — there is no format difference because the source was handwritten. The hash proves the file wasn't altered after you exported; it is not a translation certificate. As with any other order, you certify the translation under your own professional credentials using the certificate template you've configured. EZDocuAI's role ends at producing a clean, signable PDF.
Tips for a good capture
If you're photographing a manuscript instead of scanning it:
- Even lighting, no shadows across the text.
- Camera parallel to the document (no angled shots).
- Dark ink on a light background, high contrast.
- One page per photo (or stack pages into a multi-page PDF).
- Avoid social-app "auto-enhance" filters; they sometimes break thin strokes.
What it does NOT handle well yet
- Text that is illegible even to humans.
- Heavy scribbles, large stains, or overwritten ink covering the stroke.
- Complex handwritten mathematical formulas.
- Drawings and diagrams are preserved as images, not "read" as text.
In any of those cases, inspect the Transcribed text modal carefully and correct before translating.
